His life
Mashiyat studied architecture at the University of Tehran, where he earned his master’s degree in 1974. [Where he was born, his family, and what drew him to architecture.]
He built his career in New York, where he spent decades shaping the city’s public infrastructure. He worked in the architecture department of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and went on to become President and Chief Architect of Velocity Architecture & Engineering Group, part of the BRAVO Group. [Projects he was proudest of, and how colleagues remember him.]
[The small things everyone remembers: his laugh, his tea, his advice, the way he made people feel welcome.]
Building a House of Worship
In the 1980s, Mashiyat served on the Bahá’í team that supervised the construction of the Bahá’í House of Worship in New Delhi, known around the world as the Lotus Temple. Working alongside its architect, Fariborz Sahba, he helped bring to life a building that has since welcomed people of every faith and background in prayer and reflection.
[A few words about what this work meant to him, or a story he liked to tell from those years.]
Faith and service
[His years in the Bahá’í community in New York: the Feasts and Holy Days he hosted, devotional gatherings, children’s classes, or service he gave.]
O Son of the Supreme! I have made death a messenger of joy to thee. Wherefore dost thou grieve? I made the light to shed on thee its splendour. Why dost thou veil thyself therefrom? Bahá’u’lláh, The Hidden Words, Arabic 32
